How It Works

From your first “I like something sweet” to a finished, personalized bottle — here is how creating your own perfume at SWID works.

Step 1

Tell Us What You Like

We start with a conversation.

You can tell us:

  • Perfumes you’ve worn before
  • Fragrances you already love
  • Notes you enjoy
  • Notes you don’t like
  • Whether you prefer fresh or warm
  • Sweet or clean
  • Light or noticeable
  • Floral or woody
  • Fruity or spicy
  • Oud, musk, vanilla, citrus, rose, and more

You don’t have to know the technical language.

Even something as simple as:

  • “I want something sweet but not too sweet.”
  • “I want something people notice.”

gives us somewhere to start.

Step 2

Smell & Discover

This is where the experience becomes fun.

We’ll help you explore different fragrance directions and compare scents.

  • Smell one.
  • Compare another.
  • Go back to your favorite.
  • Try something you normally wouldn’t choose.

The goal isn’t to rush. It’s to discover what your nose actually likes.

Step 3

Choose Your Direction

As you smell different options, we begin narrowing the choices.

Maybe you discover that you like:

  • Fresh citrus with musk.
  • Vanilla with something woody.
  • Rose with oud.
  • A clean scent with something warmer underneath.
  • Or a fragrance direction inspired by something you’ve loved before.

The experience becomes more focused as we understand your preferences.

Step 4

Build Your Fragrance

Once you’ve found the direction you enjoy, we can begin bringing the fragrance together.

Depending on the format and size you’re creating, you may choose a single fragrance oil or combine multiple fragrance directions.

For customers creating online, the current SWID builder allows:

30 ml

Choose one fragrance oil.

50 ml

Choose one fragrance oil or create a blend using up to four oils.

60 ml

Choose one fragrance oil or create a blend using up to five oils.

100 ml

Choose one fragrance oil or create a blend using up to four oils.

What If I Already Have a Perfume I Love?

Tell us.

A fragrance you already enjoy can help us understand your preferences.

You may also explore inspired-by fragrance oils in the SWID Oil Library.

Inspired-by fragrances are SWID fragrance interpretations and are separate from the original branded products.

Creating a custom fragrance does not mean we are reproducing another manufacturer’s proprietary formula.

The goal is to help you find or create a fragrance direction you enjoy.

What If I Have No Idea What I Like?

That’s completely fine.

You can walk in and simply say:

  • “Help me find my scent.”

We’ll begin with questions and smelling different fragrance styles.

Sometimes discovering what you don’t like is just as useful as discovering what you do.

No perfume knowledge is required.

Can I Mix More Than One Fragrance?

Yes, where the selected custom-perfume option allows blending.

The current online builder allows one oil in 30 ml, up to four oils in the 50 ml and 100 ml options, and up to five oils in the 60 ml option.

In-store availability and suitable combinations can be discussed with the SWID team.

Can I Make a Perfume as a Gift?

Yes.

A personalized fragrance can make a memorable gift.

You can choose a fragrance direction based on what the person likes and personalize an eligible bottle with engraving.

Do I need an appointment to create a perfume?

Walk-ins are welcome at the Paterson store.

For couples packages, private groups, birthdays, or special experiences, we recommend contacting SWID in advance.

Do I need to know perfume notes?

No.

Our team can start with fragrances you’ve worn before or simple preferences such as sweet, fresh, woody, floral, fruity, clean, oud, vanilla, or musk.

Can I create my perfume online?

Yes.

SWID currently offers online custom-perfume options through the website.

Can I choose perfume spray or perfume oil?

The current online custom builder supports alcohol-based and oil-based formats.

How many fragrance oils can I combine?

The current online builder allows one oil for 30 ml, up to four oils for 50 ml or 100 ml, and up to five oils for 60 ml.

Is engraving included?

Complimentary name engraving is available on eligible custom-perfume bottles.

Can I browse the fragrances before ordering?

Yes.

Can you make an exact copy of a designer perfume?

SWID offers inspired-by fragrance directions and custom fragrance options, but these are independent SWID products and are not the original branded manufacturer’s formula or product.
