You can make your own perfume in New Jersey in under an hour, without knowing anything about perfume. At SWID Perfumery on Main Street in Paterson, you walk in, smell fragrance oils with our team, choose one oil or a blend, and leave with your own engraved bottle. A visit takes about 20–30 minutes, including engraving and waiting, and custom perfume starts at $45 for a 30 ml bottle.
This guide explains how custom perfume works, what it costs, how to choose a scent when you don’t know where to start, and what to ask any studio before you book. We opened in Paterson in March 2026, and our store records show more than 5,000 custom perfumes made since then, so most of the questions below are ones our customers ask us every day.
A custom perfume is a fragrance made for one person, from the oils that person chooses. Three choices shape it.
Spray or oil. A perfume spray blends fragrance oil into an alcohol base, so you can mist it on skin and clothes. A perfume oil is applied straight to the skin. At SWID, every custom spray is made with 30% perfume oil, whatever the bottle size.
One oil or a blend. You can pick one ready fragrance oil you love, or combine several into something new. At SWID, a 30 ml bottle holds one oil, and 50, 60 and 100 ml bottles let you blend up to five.
Personal touches. The bottle is part of the gift. At SWID, name engraving is free with every custom perfume, and it can also be a short phrase or a nickname.

Name engraving is included free. Online orders can be shipped, or picked up free in Paterson, with curbside pickup available.
When you compare prices anywhere, look at three things, not just the headline number: the bottle size in ml, any deposit or extra fee, and how many oils you can combine. Birthday parties and private group events are quoted separately, because they depend on the number of guests and what you include.

The one thing you can’t do online is smell before you choose. The easiest fix is to start from oils you already know, or to browse the Oil Library and pick by the notes you like. If you’re close enough to visit, the tester step in store is worth the trip.
Making perfume together turns a visit into an event. Everyone leaves with something personal instead of a photo.
Private events are planned ahead with a deposit, and we quote each one, because the price depends on your guest count and what you include.
